FAQs
Is your coffee organic and fair trade?
Certifications aren't something we're focused on because smaller, family owned farms usually can't afford to get organic certifications, even if they are totally organic and sustainable. We source all our coffees from farms that are small, family owned and that use sustainable farming methods such as natural fertilizers and compost, not harmful chemicals. As far as fair trade goes, fair trade standards are pretty much the bare minimum as far as being good for the farmers goes. We source our beans directly, something in the industry known as direct trade, which ensures the farmers are able to make a living off their coffees, and build a relationship with our roaster, instead of being treated as a commodity. Direct trade also gives buyers and roasters better control over quality and flavor, ensuring the best products make it to our customers.
Why did my order come in separate shipments?
We source our products from a few different places, so we aren't able to ship all orders as one package. All our coffees are shipped right from the roastery, so they will all be together, while our merch products are sent out right from the manufacturer, all of whom are based in the US. All our other products come directly from manufacturers in mainland China, and may take a bit longer to arrive than our US based products. Shipping directly from manufacture means less total miles and fossil fuels spent, which matches our mission as a company. However, it does mean that shipping from certain manufacturers might take longer than if we ordered an excess, and stored them in a large warehouse. Instead of manufacturing excess products, we only order things from our manufacturing partners after they are ordered by our customers, since this takes less of a toll on the environment, however, it can result in slightly longer shipping times. We appreciate your patience with us while we try to fulfill your orders as soon as possible, and while we work towards finding a faster solution.
Can I order pre-ground coffee?
Yes. We pre-grind coffee for conventional drip only, however, so if you want to make your coffee via pour over, aeropress, french press, or any other way, we suggest you buy our beans whole and grind them at home yourself. We have a selection of hand grinders you might be interested in on our coffee brewing supplies page.
What's the best way to brew your coffee?
We recommend the pour over method of your choice, however, any way of brewing will work well and produce delicious coffee because we focus on sourcing the best possible beans and roasting them for optimal flavor.
How should I store my coffee?
We recommend storing it in the bag it comes in, keeping it in a cool dry place like a cabinet or pantry. We don't recommend the fridge or freezer since they have too much moisture and this can affect the taste of your coffee when it's brewed. A great alternative to the bag it comes in, however, would be an airtight container that is stored away from light and moisture.
What kinds of organizations do you donate to?
We donate to charities that are focused on sustainability and conservation of natural resources. We only donate to charities with a 4 star rating on CharityNavigator.org with a 90% or above score. We will update this page and the Our Giving page after our first economic year comes to a close and we have donated for the year.
